Here is a 10-day training program specifically for authors who want to learn how to write precise, visual, yet literarily sophisticated close-up descriptions.
Each day’s assignment builds on the previous one and takes about 20–30 minutes to complete.
Day 1 – Single-Part Study: Choose a hand or foot. Write down at least five observable traits – shape, proportion, color, texture, position.
Day 2 – Detail Chain: Move slowly from one segment (e.g., foot to knee), describing each step in sequence.
Day 3 – Sensory Layer: Add at least one sensory element (touch, scent, temperature) to each part.
Day 4 – Hold Focus: Write several sentences on a single detail without moving on.
Day 5 – Taboo Zones: Practice describing genitals or breasts with anatomical precision, without value judgments.
Day 6 – Upward Scan: Guide the reader’s eyes from the feet up to the face in smooth, tension-building steps.
Day 7 – Movement in Closeup: Show how muscles, skin, and light change with movement.
Day 8 – Voyeuristic Perspective: Describe from the point of view of a character who is deliberately watching.
Day 9 – Emotion in Closeup: Combine physical detail with the emotional impact it has on the observer.
Day 10 – Full Closeup Scene: Combine all elements into a single 300-word scene that starts at the feet and ends at the face.
Pro tip:
After each day, you should read your exercise aloud. This will help you immediately notice where the text falters or is too abstract.
