D\u00e9crire l’odeur des chambres<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La premi\u00e8re chose que je remarque est l’odeur : du cuir, du bois, de l’encaustique avec un l\u00e9ger parfum d’agrumes.<\/p>\nE.L.James : Cinquante nuances de gris<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Il faut \u00e0 E.L.James une page pour d\u00e9crire la “chambre des tourments” de Christian Grey avant d’avancer dans l’intrigue. Elle commence sa description d\u00e9cid\u00e9e par l’odeur de la chambre<\/strong>. Lorsque je consulte ce passage, il me semble beaucoup plus court que lorsque je l’ai lu pour la premi\u00e8re fois. C’est probablement parce que la premi\u00e8re fois que je l’ai lu, tout un univers d’images associ\u00e9es \u00e0 ces odeurs s’est imm\u00e9diatement ouvert \u00e0 moi. Non seulement je lis l’odeur du cuir, mais j’associe instantan\u00e9ment les objets qui d\u00e9gagent cette odeur. Il en va de m\u00eame pour le bois. C’est ainsi que fonctionne notre cerveau. Il associe des choses famili\u00e8res.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est vrai : La description de James n’est pas tr\u00e8s litt\u00e9raire. Pourtant, elle a saisi un principe important de l’\u00e9criture sensuelle. Les odeurs sont souvent la premi\u00e8re chose que nous remarquons dans un nouvel espace<\/strong>. C’est pourquoi il n’est pas tr\u00e8s logique de placer une telle description \u00e0 un endroit ult\u00e9rieur du texte. Sauf, peut-\u00eatre, lorsqu’une nouvelle odeur fait irruption dans le d\u00e9cor, soit lorsqu’un incendie se d\u00e9clare, soit parce que l’un des protagonistes entre dans la pi\u00e8ce avec une forte odeur\/parfum personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans la litt\u00e9rature sensuelle en particulier, il est important de donner aux odeurs leur juste place. Sandra l’avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 soulign\u00e9 ailleurs (voir Odeurs et effets<\/a>). Et le meilleur endroit pour une telle repr\u00e9sentation est toujours lorsque notre protagoniste explore quelque chose de nouveau<\/strong>, qu’il s’agisse d’un espace ou d’une personne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans son livre “Writing Vivid Settings : Professional Techniques for Fiction Authors”, l’auteure Rayne Hall souligne ce principe. Elle d\u00e9clare : “Une seule phrase sur les odeurs peut en dire plus sur une pi\u00e8ce que plusieurs paragraphes de descriptions visuelle<\/strong>s. C’est utile si vous voulez que vos descriptions soient courtes”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elle rappelle que les odeurs suscitent imm\u00e9diatement des \u00e9motions. En travaillant avec des odeurs agr\u00e9ables ou d\u00e9sagr\u00e9ables, nous pouvons tr\u00e8s rapidement susciter des sentiments positifs ou n\u00e9gatifs chez le lecteur. Reprenons l’ouverture de E. L. James. En quelques mots, elle brosse un tableau de richesse (cuir neuf), de confort (au moins, l’odeur du bois a toujours un effet tr\u00e8s calmant sur moi. C’est probablement un effet de la socialisation Ikea) et de la propret\u00e9 (vernis aux agrumes). On retrouve imm\u00e9diatement la tension entre richesse troublante et solidit\u00e9 rassurante, dans laquelle Ana se trouve d’ailleurs actuellement. Soutenue par la connaissance : Tout est propre ici. R\u00e9sum\u00e9e en un peu plus de trois notes olfactives.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
