La nudit\u00e9 est utilis\u00e9e au th\u00e9\u00e2tre depuis des si\u00e8cles, avec des exemples remontant au th\u00e9\u00e2tre grec antique. En effet, la nudit\u00e9 \u00e9tait un \u00e9l\u00e9ment courant dans les trag\u00e9dies et les com\u00e9dies grecques, dans lesquelles les acteurs apparaissaient souvent nus. Dans certains cas, la nudit\u00e9 servait \u00e0 repr\u00e9senter des personnages tels que des dieux ou des h\u00e9ros, cens\u00e9s incarner des id\u00e9aux de beaut\u00e9 physique et de force. Dans d’autres cas, elle servait \u00e0 cr\u00e9er un effet comique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans le th\u00e9\u00e2tre moderne, la nudit\u00e9 est souvent utilis\u00e9e pour explorer des th\u00e8mes tels que la sexualit\u00e9, la vuln\u00e9rabilit\u00e9 et la dynamique du pouvoir. Elle peut \u00e9galement \u00eatre utilis\u00e9e pour remettre en question les tabous et les conventions sociales et pour faire une d\u00e9claration politique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce qui est plus inhabituel, c’est que les productions th\u00e9\u00e2trales portent la nudit\u00e9 dans l’espace public et que les actrices se pr\u00e9sentent ainsi non seulement \u00e0 un public payant, mais aussi aux passants qui passent par hasard. En 2016, une repr\u00e9sentation de “The Tempest” de William Shakespeare a eu lieu dans Central Park \u00e0 New York. Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 produite par la Torn Out Theatre Company et a mis l’accent sur le choc culturel entre l’ancien et le nouveau monde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le metteur en sc\u00e8ne de la pi\u00e8ce, Pitr Strait, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 dans une interview au portail en ligne Gothamist<\/a> : “Dans presque toutes ses pi\u00e8ces, Shakespeare touche d’une mani\u00e8re ou d’une autre au choc entre l’ancien et le nouveau, l’ordinaire et le radical. En nous basant sur le texte de Shakespeare, nous avons cr\u00e9\u00e9 un monde dans lequel la nudit\u00e9 fait sens : les habitants de l’\u00eele vivent loin de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9, \u00e0 l’abri du danger et n’ont pas besoin de se v\u00eatir. Inversement, les naufrag\u00e9s qui sont rejet\u00e9s sur le rivage doivent d\u00e9couvrir par eux-m\u00eames que leurs v\u00eatements orn\u00e9s et contraignants sont totalement d\u00e9plac\u00e9s dans ce monde \u00e9trange et sauvage”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La metteuse en sc\u00e8ne consultante Alice Mottola avait auparavant expliqu\u00e9 ainsi les raisons de l’abolition des v\u00eatements traditionnels : “La Temp\u00eate est l’une des pi\u00e8ces les plus connues et les plus populaires de Shakespeare, mais nous voulons que le public la voie d’un \u0153il nouveau, comme ‘quelque chose de riche et d’\u00e9tranger’, comme l’aurait vu un public il y a quatre cents ans. L’objectif de ce projet est une petite \u00e9tape dans un processus beaucoup plus large de normalisation du corps f\u00e9minin dans un contexte non sexuel. Pour y parvenir, nous avons d\u00fb utiliser la nudit\u00e9 comme un outil int\u00e9gral de la narration. La mani\u00e8re dont nous racontons des histoires doit correspondre \u00e0 l’histoire que nous racontons, et notre Temp\u00eate est une histoire de libert\u00e9, de transformation et d’acceptation. Les gens peuvent \u00eatre choqu\u00e9s au d\u00e9but, mais nous esp\u00e9rons que notre public changera lui aussi et qu’\u00e0 la fin de la pi\u00e8ce, il ne trouvera plus la nudit\u00e9 d\u00e9rangeante ou choquante et sera peut-\u00eatre m\u00eame plus \u00e0 l’aise avec le concept de nudit\u00e9 en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marisa Roper, qui joue Miranda dans la pi\u00e8ce, souligne \u00e9galement l’approche f\u00e9ministe et corporelle positive de la pi\u00e8ce : “En tant que femme, j’ai le sentiment qu’il est temps de se lever et de dire : H\u00e9, c’est notre corps, il n’y a rien dont nous devrions avoir honte. C’est simplement notre corps. J’esp\u00e8re qu’une production comme celle-ci peut contribuer \u00e0 normaliser le corps des femmes. Nos corps ne sont pas naturellement sexuels”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La production a \u00e9t\u00e9 unanimement salu\u00e9e par la critique et a re\u00e7u des avis majoritairement positifs, et ce malgr\u00e9 quelques tentatives de la presse conservatrice de scandaliser le spectacle.
